STEM Rooted in Culture Summer 2024 Series

NHMU's STEM Rooted in Culture series brings together community experts and educators to broaden diversity and equity in K-12 social studies and STEM classrooms.  

This summers series titled Weaving Stories Beyond Borders is presented in partnership with María Elena and Vicky K’ulub Lowe and developed in partnership with Artes De Mexico en Utah.  

You can attend both workshops and do a short homework assignment to earn 0.5 USBE credit OR earn 4 relicensure hours per workshop attended.

Colors of Nature

Saturday, June 8th, 2024 from 10:30am to 2:30pm at Wasatch Community Garden

Learn the art of creating natural dyes from plants and other natural resources while learning about the meaning of color for the Maya Tseltal Community.  Discuss sustainability and environmental practices focused on the use of natural dyes, agricultural practices, economic empowerment, cultural exchange, and education.  Explore cultural symbols and designs that hold spiritual significance.  Create artworks inspired by nature using natural dyes and participate in a STEM activity. Weaving a Revolution

Saturday, August 3rd, 2024 from 10:30am - 2:30pm at Wasatch Community Garden

Understand the profound connections between weaving practices and relationship to the land for Indigenous cultures, particularly the diasporic indigenous community in Utah. Explore the interwoven relationship between Maya traditional weaving techniques and environmentally sourced materials.  Appreciate weaving as a practice of deep cultural significance within communities, as a traditional artform that carries historical, spiritual, and artistic importance. Learn ways to use weaving as a teaching tool to ensure that cultural heritage and traditions are preserved and passed down through generations, and participate in a STEM activity.
