Behind the Scenes: Science Up Close
A Year in The Life of NHMU
Saturday, November 17, 2012, marks the one-year anniversary of opening the doors to our new home, the Rio Tinto Center. To cap off the excitement of our inaugural year, we're opening up the "employees only" doors, inviting you to glimpse at our amazing behind-the-scenes work.
Don't miss this opportunity to view science up close as you explore the collections storage and research labs of the Museum.
Celebrate One Year with $1.00 off Admission
To celebrate the success of our first year, we are taking $1.00 off admission for both days of the event!
"Behind the Scenes: Science Up Close" Activites
The Paleo Collection: View huge paleo objects in "jackets", see a plethora of specimens from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinsoaur Quarry, and go inside the Fossil Prep Lab to see what the paleo team has recently dug up!
Archaeology in the Range Creek Lab: Learn about the Museum's current work cataloguing artifacts from Range Creek Canyon, ojbects that have been untouched by other humans for over a thousand years.
Anthropology Conservation Lab: Observe the delicate work of conserving rare anthropology objects from Museum staff and explore selected specimens up close.
The Biology Labs: Examine specimens to understand how they -- some of which are extremely old -- help scientists understand changes in our environment over time.
Plant Identification in the Herbarium: Hear how plants become a part of the Garrett Herbarium and test your plant identification skills in a Plant Matching Game.
Experience the Mobile Museum: Create your own artifact to exhibit on a mobile-like structure that will be suspended in the Canyon as part of a community science display!
The Exhibits Workshop: Learn about the work of museum preparators while handling object mounts and seeing the wide range of tools and equipment used to build exhibits!
Activities Throughout the Museum's Galleries: Just like every visit to the Museum, you'll be able to participate in hands-on activities led by Gallery Interpreters throughout the two-day event.
Take an Architecture Tour: Explore the Rio Tinto Center's unique design, materials, "green" features, and public art installations on a guided Archiecture Tour. Tours will be offered Saturday 11/17 at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. only.
