Design for Disaster

Saturday, June 15, 2013 - 12:00pm - 4:00pm
The Canyon

What does it take to design a structure that stands up to the power of an earthquake?

Take the NHMU seismic design challenge!

  • Ask a structural engineer about the basic engineering principles and the latest technologies engineers used to create seismically-safe buildings.
  • Create your own structure, test its performance in a quake, and experiment with improving your design.
  • Take a brief tour of the seismic features of the Rio Tinto Center. (Tours offered between 2:00 and 4:00 pm.)
  • See what furnishings are still standing after an earthquake in a model house and find out how to make your home safer in an earthquake with Utah's own "Earthquake Lady."

Continue your seismic explorations with computer models and videos showing how buildings perform in a quake and hands-on activities featuring slinky earthquake waves and liquefaction in the Nature Unleashed exhibit.
