Join us Behind the Scenes

With 163,000 square feet in our home at the Rio Tinto Center, only 43,000 square feet are used for exhibits. What else is at the Natural History Museum of Utah?
Don’t miss your chance to venture behind the scenes at the Natural History Museum of Utah. You’ll see stunning artifacts, learn about the Museum’s current research from our scientists, and discover how we care for the 1.5 million objects in our collections.
  • Explore Glen Canyon’s archaeological treasures. University of Utah archaeologists were part of a team that raced to recover artifacts from Glen Canyon before Lake Powell filled. See pottery, stone tools, and much more made by the Ancestral Puebloan peoples who inhabited this lost world.
  • Discover Utah’s new dinosaurs. Museum paleontologists have unearthed more than a dozen new species of dinosaur in southern Utah in recent years. See our latest finds and meet the paleontologists who study them. National Geographic highlighted this trove of new dinosaur species in their May 2014 issue.
  • Marvel at shelves of brilliant butterflies, delicate pressed plants, amazing small mammals, and jars of snakes in our biology collections. Learn how our scientists use these collections to understand challenges facing us today.
