Teacher Workshop: Constructing a Welcoming Education Experience Part 2

July 26th 2023 Constructing a Welcoming Education Experience, Part 2

This is a continuation of the April 2023 Constructing a Welcoming Education Experience Educator Workshop. Everyone is welcome to join this session even if they did not attend Part one of this series! Presenters will share important information that will be helpful for everyone interested in the topic!

What is intersectionality? What is inclusion? Why do pronouns matter ? Why should we as teachers care about representation? The words we use in our classrooms matter! LGBTQ+ students with many supportive staff at their school were less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation (34.7% vs. 64.2%), gender expression (32.6% vs. 51.7%) and gender (30.1% vs 48.3%); and were less likely to miss school because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable (20.1% vs. 42.4%).

Learn strategies to help students feel included and supported in your classroom. Support your students’ mental health and emotional learning with practical and implementable strategies. The Utah Pride Center and guest speaker LeiLoni Allan, member of the Nuanua Collective, an LGBTQ+ organization that focuses on uplifting the Queer and trans-BIPOC experience and voices, will share resources on the basics of diversity, inclusion, and equity topics and will answer the questions you always wanted to ask. Hear from guest speaker Breanna Taylor-Lof, member of the F.A.M (Friends, Allies, and Mentors) leadership team, and learn practical tools to apply in your teaching. Walk away with actionable skills and strategies to recognize and support the uniqueness of each one of your students! This is intended to be a 101-level introduction to this topic, more advanced workshops will be scheduled in the Fall of 2023.
