Craft Night: Coiled Baskets

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
The Natural History Museum of Utah

Learn the ancient basket-making technique of coiling – the same technique Navajo artists used to create the spectacular baskets in our Weaving a Revolution exhibition.  While Navajo weavers create baskets with sumac, we’ll experiment with a range of user-friendly materials like yarn, rope, round-reed, and raffia.  You’ll be able to start a basket and take home some materials to continue your project.

You’ll also meet Navajo basket weaver Anderson Black, the youngest of renowned weaver Mary Holiday Black’s children.  Watch Anderson demonstrate the process of weaving with sumac, explore his tools and materials, and ask him your questions.
