Master basket weaver Mary Black says, “Each ceremonial basket has a story. If we stop making the baskets, we lose the stories.” With Georgiana Kennedy Simpson as our guide, we will explore these stories to understand the Navajo ceremonial basket’s role in providing a sacred space while giving visual cues about one’s life, the history of the Navajo people, and a mnemonic representation of the Navajo world.
Ms. Simpson will be signing copies of her book, Navajo Ceremonial Baskets: Sacred Symbols, Sacred Space, following her presentation.
Writer, trader and artist, Georgiana Kennedy Simpson, hails from a family with a 100+ year trading tradition in the Four Corners region. Her work is inspired by the richness of local cultures and the magic of the surrounding landscape. She experiences her deepest pleasure by running, hiking and riding horses in the washes, canyons, mesas and mountains with her husband, children and friends.
