The Secret Life of Bees
Set amid the hotbed of racial tensions in the 1960s South, writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood's touching drama is based on Sue Monk Kidd's best-selling novel of the same name. Haunted by her mother’s death, 14-year-old Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) escapes her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father as she flees with Rosaleen Daise (Jennifer Hudson), her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping.
Join us after the film for an exploration of Utah’s bees, concerns about the future of bees, and the art of beekeeping with Natural History Museum of Utah Entomologist Christy Bills.
