A fourth generation Navajo basket weaver, Joann Johnson learned to weave rugs and baskets from her mother when she was eight years old. "Weaving comes naturally for me," she says. Joann is a master of color. She is known for her beautiful baskets with designs reminiscent of mosaics or the Color Field painters of the mid-twentieth century. Her landscape baskets portraying the Monument Valley mittens, Shiprock, and Delicate Arch capture the subtle play of moonlight on sandstone. Joann’s baskets have won many awards, including first place at the Gallup Ceremonials.
