The Natural History Museum of Utah - Where Science Meets Fun! 

NHMU offers several exciting workshops that will help your Girl Scout fulfill her badges and participatory patches. Current program offerings are below and registration is through the Girl Scouts of Utah website. Please plan to arrive about 15  minutes prior to the program start time to allow for parking and check in.



November 4 - 5 | Roar and Snore Overnight at NHMU 

Join us for an unforgettable evening among the exhibits! We’ll begin the night with several hands-on science explorations from flight and LED creations to boo bubbles and dino skin necklaces. A late night snack will be next before heading off for a Museum-wide scavenger hunt. Then, unroll your sleeping bag beneath a giant spiral of DNA, a case of sparkling butterflies, or the watchful eyes of an elk. Before you settle in for the night, gather around a virtual campfire for a story. The next morning, enjoy a continental breakfast and then set out for the rest of your day full of memories of your sleepover adventure! 

Grade: Brownie, Junior & Cadette Girl Scouts
Date/Time: Friday, November 4th at 6:30pm through Saturday, November 5th until 8:30am
Fee: $40/Scout, $20/Leaders; Troops or Girl and Adult; one adult chaperone per 4 girls required

November 19 | Amazing Engineering | Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts

We’ll use a variety of materials and tools to investigate size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Participants will create gumdrop towers, paper towers, straw rockets and more as we investigate the engineering design process. We’ll end the session applying our new discoveries to several design challenges. Plus, receive a participation patch from NHMU! December 10 | Just Shocking! | Brownie Girl Scouts

Electricity—we depend on it every minute of the day and yet many don’t understand its basic principles. In this session, Brownie Girl Scouts will develop an understanding of electrical current by using their critical thinking skills and deductive reasoning to create their own electric circuits using simple materials. We’ll end the session creating light sabers and large-scale bristle bots. Plus, receive a participation patch from NHMU! If you love electronics and circuits, use this workshop as a part of your plan for creating a Make Your Own badge. Badges available for purchase at the GSU Shop.

December 10 | DIY Tech | Junior Girl Scouts

Join us as we discover the science behind everyday technology and its basic principles. In this session, Junior Girl Scouts will gain greater understanding of electrical current by using their critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills to create their own electric circuits. We’ll explore LEDs while creating bristle bots and paper circuits. Plus, receive a participation patch from NHMU! At least two of the five requirements of the Entertainment Technology badge will be fulfilled. Badges available for purchase at the GSU Shop.

January 21 | Geology 101 | Brownie Girl Scouts

Brownie Girl Scouts will identify rocks and minerals while investigating their amazing properties, explore the fossilization process and layers of the Earth, visit the Paleontology Lab and tour aspects of the Past Worlds gallery. January 21 | Paleo 101

Delve into the science of paleontology from the field to the lab. Discover how fossils are formed, where we find them, tour aspects of our Past Worlds gallery, and meet some of the people who prepare and study fossils at the Museum. February 11 | Bugs Alive! | Brownie Girl Scouts

Join us as we explore the world of insects at the Natural History Museum of Utah! You’ll meet live insects and critters, explore life cycles, create art, and more. You’ll “bee” an expert in all things buggy after this workshop! Plus, receive a participation patch from NHMU. This workshop will fulfill four of the five requirements for the Bugs badge. There's an amazing ecosystem in your backyard! Get to know some of the many plants, insects, and animals that make their homes in Utah as you fulfill 3 of the 5 Animal Habitats badge requirements at the Natural History Museum of Utah. You'll investigate predator and prey relationships, life cycles and habitats through activities and crafts. Plus, receive a participation patch from NHMU! April 21-22 | Full STEAM Ahead: Late Night at NHMU | All Girl Scouts

Join us for an evening of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) explorations. We’ll have all sorts of exciting science activities for you to participate in from catapults, rollercoasters and LED explorations to color mixing and the creation of paper bowls, salt water painting and dinosaur skin necklaces. All Girl Scouts are invited to participate. Arrive having eaten dinner.

Grade: Open to all Girl Scouts and their adult chaperones
Date/Time: Friday Night, April 21st; 6:30 – 10:30pm
Fee: $40/Scout, $20/Leaders
Limit: 85 Scouts plus chaperones
