NHMU second and third grade camp sessions are for students who will enter either of these grades in the fall of 2017. For Partner Camp listings, where needed, transportation between sites is provided. Planetary Detectives

Partner Camp with Clark Planetarium

Journey through the galaxy and explore the mysteries of our solar system. While at the Clark Planetarium each morning, campers will learn about the planets, stars and constellations while enjoying other spaced-out projects and activities. Each afternoon at NHMU, campers will investigate the powerful processes that sculpt our Earth from weathering to the water cycle. We’ll explore soil science, investigate rocks and minerals, create volcanoes and earthquakes, and meet some of the astronomers working at the University of Utah. Drop camper off at the Clark Planetarium by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Adventures in Science

Partner Camp with Camp Kostopulos

Join us for a week of camp adventures! Morning activities at Camp K will include hiking, rock climbing, fishing, swimming, spending time with the horses and playing field games. Afternoons will be spent with Museum educators, investigating forensic science—from analyzing finger, lip and footprints to extracting DNA, examining microbes and inspecting chromatography. Drop camper off at Camp Kostopulos by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

The Ultimate Camp Experience

Partner Camp with Camp Kostopulos, Red Butte Garden, This is the Place, and Utah’s Hogle Zoo

If you can only attend one camp this summer, make it this one! Join us for a week of signature camp activities where each day finds campers at a different location with new experiences. While at Camp Kostopulos students will enjoy ropes courses, spending time with the horses, rock climbing, and fishing. At Red Butte Garden, campers will enjoy a plethora of garden adventures from plants to insects. At This is the Place we’ll investigate Utah's past pioneer history through train rides, panning for gold, and pioneer activities. Discover and meet some of the animals that call Utah’s Hogle Zoo home. And while at the Natural History Museum of Utah, participate in a range of science topics from chemistry and physics to earth science and biology. One week has never been so exciting! Chose from one session below. Each session indicates where a camper is to be dropped off and picked up each day.

    Exploring Machines with LEGO®

    Partner Camp with Play-Well TEKnologies

    For kids who love to build! Each morning will be spent with Play-Well staff inventing, designing, and building with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO® while exploring large-scale building machines like steamrollers, bulldozers, wrecking balls, and tower cranes. Afternoons will find campers using use a variety of materials and tools to investigate size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Drop camper off at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) by 8:30am and pick up at UMNH at 4:30pm. Campers will be walked between sites during lunch.

    Science Adventure Class: It’s Electric!

    Electricity—we depend on it every minute of the day and yet many don’t understand its basic principles. In this camp session, students will develop an understanding of electrical current by using their critical thinking skills and deductive reasoning. They’ll create their own electric circuits using simple materials. We’ll also try to extract electricity from fruits and veggies, play music, explore littleBits, create paper circuits, and much more!

    Science Adventure Class: Gross-ology

    Sometimes it's stinky. Sometimes it's crusty. And sometimes it's slimy. Join us as we explore all things gross from germ and mold culturing, egg eruptions and fake snot to stinky cheese, body mites and chocolate covered insects. It’s gross, it’s fascinating—and you’ll LOVE IT!

    Dinosaurs Past and Present

    Partner Camp with Tracy Aviary

    Start your mornings at Tracy Aviary, exploring the dinosaurs that live among us today—birds! Find out what makes a bird a bird and discover the amazing adaptations that allow them to live in diverse environments across the globe. At the Natural History Museum of Utah each afternoon, we’ll delve into the science of paleontology. Discover how fossils are formed, where we find them, and meet some of the people who prepare and study fossils at the Museum. Drop camper off at Tracy Aviary by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

    Farm to Table

    Partner Camp with Wasatch Community Garden

    Join us for an exciting week of gardening and food discoveries! Spend mornings at Wasatch Community Gardens learning about organic gardening, tasting fresh produce, creating garden art and more. Each afternoon campers will explore food science and technology from learning to chop, peel and measure to prepping snacks and cooking with solar. Drop campers off at Wasatch Community Garden’s Grateful Tomato Garden by 8:30am and pick them up at NHMU at 4:30pm.

    Science Adventure Class: Geology Basics

    Calling all rock hounds! Join us for a week of geologic explorations from investigating the rock cycle and geologic processes to identifying and classifying rocks, minerals and crystals. We’ll also visit the Museum’s geology collections, as well as the Geology Department and seismology lab on campus while exploring the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Geology ROCKS!

    The Vikings Are Coming!

    Partner Camp with Tanner Dance

    Vikings struck fear into the hearts of the people of medieval Europe—but who were they really? Join us and find out! Mornings at Tanner Dance will have campers engaging in dance, drama, and visual arts using Viking mythology as inspiration. Each afternoon at the Museum, campers will investigate the culture and explorations of the Vikings, from shipbuilding to daily life. Plus, explore the Vikings exhibit! Drop camper off at Tanner Dance by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Parents are invited to join us for a performance on Friday afternoon at the Museum. Transportation between sites is provided.

    Full STEAM Ahead

    Partner Camp with Zaniac

    Join us for a week of amazing hands-on science that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Each morning at Zaniac, campers will explore tinkering with littleBits, Game-Based Learning with Minecraft, Zaniac Robotics using LEGO® systems, and will program custom animations in MIT’s Scratch. While at the Museum each afternoon, students will spend time exploring static and current electricity from basic circuits to batteries and brush bots. Drop camper off at Zaniac by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

    Native Voices

    Partner Camp with Bad Dog Arts

    Spend four days exploring the rich histories and vibrant contemporary cultures of Utah’s indigenous peoples. Each morning while at Bad Dog Arts, students will explore and create artwork inspired by our state’s natural beauty, wonderful wildlife, and first inhabitants. Every afternoon at NHMU, campers will experience the important role of storytelling, music, dance, and symbolism in passing culture through the generations. Plus, meet some of the people carrying these traditions forward in new and exciting ways. Drop camper off at Bad Dog Arts by 8:30am and pick up at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

    Nature Explorers

    Partner Camp with Red Butte Garden

    Join us for a week of nature explorations! Campers will spend mornings at Red Butte Garden exploring the natural area and formal gardens as they learn the basics of botany and plant science. In the afternoon, campers will travel to NHMU to investigate the animals and insects that call Utah home through excursions in the foothills around the Museum. Campers will also explore water and soil science through hands-on projects and experiments. Drop camper off at Red Butte Garden by 9:00am and pick up at UMNH at 4:30pm. Campers will walk between sites.

    Engineering for Girls

    Partner Camp with Play-Well TEKnologies

    Explore engineering from the ground up! Mornings will be spent investigating LEGO® building systems with Play-Well staff, applying real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as catapults and arch bridges. Afternoons will find campers using a variety of materials and tools to explore size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Camper drop off and pick up takes place at NHMU.
