NHMU fourth and fifth grade camp sessions are for students who will enter either of these grades in the fall of 2017. For Partner Camp listings, where needed, transportation between sites is provided. Dynamic Universe

Partner Camp with the Clark Planetarium

Journey through the galaxy and explore the mysteries of Earth and space. While at NHMU each morning, campers will investigate the powerful processes that sculpt our Earth from weathering to the water cycle. We’ll also explore rocks and minerals, create volcanoes and earthquakes, and meet some of the astronomers working at the University of Utah. Each afternoon while at the Clark Planetarium, learn about the planets, stars and constellations while enjoying other spaced-out projects and activities. Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at the Clark Planetarium at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Lights, Camera…MUSEUM! 

Partner Camp with Spy Hop

We’re unleashing a new crop of nature film masterminds! Students will begin their day at the Museum, where they will explore the areas surrounding the Museum, investigating the plants, animals and geology of the area.  Each afternoon with Spy Hop, students will find funny and informative ways to educate viewers on our local environments. Students will act, use cameras, green-screens, stop-motion animation, create original songs and more to create collaborative pieces in this wildly inventive mash up. Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at Spy Hop at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Science Adventures 

Partner Camp with Camp Kostopulos

Let’s explore! While at the Museum each morning, campers will investigate forensic science—from analyzing handwriting and finger-, lip- and footprints to extracting DNA, examining microbes, and identifying unknown chemicals.  Afternoons will be spent at Camp K participating in outdoor camp activities like hiking, rock climbing, fishing, swimming, spending time with the horses and playing field games. Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at Camp Kostopulos at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Great Salt Lake Discoveries for Girls Only

Partner Camp with FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake

Ladies, the Great Salt Lake is ours to discover! With staff from FRIENDS of GSL, you’ll investigate the cool and unique ecosystem at the Great Salt Lake, from brine shrimp to water bugs and everything in-between. We’ll visit places like Antelope Island and Farmington Bay, conduct salty experiments, chew pickle weed, and watch birds through binoculars. We are investigators, adventurous, and love being outside. Drop off and pick up take place at NHMU. Transportation to field trip locations is provided.

Science Adventure Class: Geocaching 101

The world is an amazing place. Join us as we explore the geography of place, space and environment. Campers will learn all about geocaching, from how to use a GPS unit to tracking and finding a cache. Students will also be creating their own travel-bugs as they learn about geocaching etiquette.

Science Adventure Class: ScienceART

This amazing hands-on class builds upon a child’s natural curiosity as we explore science and art concepts. We’ll tie-dye and batik fabrics, create print block art all while getting creative with LED lights, circuits, magnets and more!

Engineering Challenge with LEGO®

Partner Camp with Play-Well TEKnologies

Power up your engineering skills! Each morning will be spent with Museum staff, exploring simple and complex machines using a variety of materials and tools. We’ll investigate size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Afternoons will find campers with Play-Well staff inventing, designing, and building with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO®. We’ll explore large-scale building machines like steamrollers, bulldozers, wrecking balls, and tower cranes. Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) at 4:30pm. Campers will be walked between sites during lunch.

Scales to Feathers 

Partner Camp with Tracy Aviary

Dinosaurs are still among us! Campers will delve into the science of paleontology—from the field to the lab—while at NHMU. Discover how fossils are formed, where we find them, and meet some of the people who prepare and study fossils at the Museum. Travel to Tracy Aviary each afternoon to explore the dinosaurs that live among us today – birds! Find out what makes a bird a bird and discover the adaptations that allow them to live in diverse environments across the globe. Drop campers off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick them up at Tracy Aviary at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Food Science

Partner Camp with Wasatch Community Gardens

Knowing about the food we eat is important, not only for our bodies, but for the environment. Join us for a week of food investigations. Spend mornings at the Natural History Museum, exploring food science and technology from studying yeast while making pretzels, mixing up rootbeer and salad dressing to curdling milk, investigating viscosity and cooking with solar. Each afternoon will find campers at Wasatch Community Gardens, learning about organic gardening, tasting fresh produce, creating garden art and more. Drop campers off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick them up at Wasatch Community Garden’s Grateful Tomato Garden at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Science Adventure Class: Geology ROCKS!

Join us for a week of geologic explorations from investigating the rock cycle and landform processes to identifying and classifying rocks, minerals and crystals. We’ll also visit the Museum’s geology collections, as well as the Geology Department and seismology lab on campus while exploring the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.

The Ultimate Camp Experience

Partner Camp with Camp Kostopulos, Red Butte Garden, This is the Place, and Utah’s Hogle Zoo

If you can only attend one camp this summer, make it this one! Join us for a week of signature camp activities where each day finds campers at a different location with new experiences. While at Camp Kostopulos students will enjoy ropes courses, spending time with the horses, rock climbing, and fishing. At Red Butte Garden, campers will enjoy a plethora of garden adventures from plants to insects. At This is the Place we’ll investigate Utah's past pioneer history through train rides, panning for gold, and pioneer activities. Discover and meet some of the animals that call Utah’s Hogle Zoo home. And while at the Natural History Museum of Utah, participate in a range of science topics from chemistry and physics to earth science and biology. One week has never been so exciting! Chose from one session below. Each session indicates where a camper is to be dropped off and picked up each day.

Meet the Vikings

Partner Camp with Tanner Dance

What do you picture when you hear the word “Viking”? Ruthless? Warlike? Savage? Who were the Vikings and what were they really like? Find out in this week of all things Vikings; from Norse mythology, rope and boat-making to games, stories, dance and movement. Plus, get an in-depth look at the Vikings exhibit! Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at Tanner Dance at 4:30pm, M-TH. On Friday, pick campers up at NHMU and watch a performance created by students at the Museum from 4-4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

STEAM Explorations

Partner Camp with Zaniac

Join us for a week of amazing hands-on science that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Each morning at the Museum students will spend time exploring static and current electricity from basic circuits to batteries and brush bots. While at Zaniac each afternoon, campers will explore tinkering with littleBits, Game-Based Learning with Minecraft, Zaniac Robotics using LEGO systems, and will also programming custom animations in MIT’s Scratch. Drop campers off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick them up at Zaniac at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

American Indian Heritage

Partner Camp with Bad Dog Arts

Spend four days exploring the rich histories and vibrant contemporary cultures of Utah’s indigenous peoples. Each morning at NHMU, campers will experience the important role of storytelling, music, dance, and symbolism in passing culture through the generations. Campers will learn how to weave while creating rock art and pottery. Plus, meet some of the people carrying these traditions forward in new and exciting ways. While at Bad Dog Arts each afternoon, students will explore and create artwork inspired by our state’s natural beauty, wonderful wildlife, and first inhabitants. Drop camper off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at Bad Dog Arts at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Explorers Camp

Partner Camp with Red Butte Garden

Join us for a week of nature explorations! Campers will spend mornings at NHMU, investigating the animals and insects that call Utah home through excursions in the foothills around the Museum. Campers will also explore water and soil science through hands-on projects and experiments. In the afternoon campers will travel to Red Butte Garden and will explore the natural area and formal gardens as they learn the basics of botany and plant science. Drop off at NHMU by 8:30am and pick up at Red Butte Garden at 4:00pm. Campers will walk between sites.

Girl Powered Engineering

Partner Camp with Play-Well TEKnologies

For girls who love to build! This camp encourages the natural talents and interests that girls have in physics and engineering. Mornings will have campers using a variety of materials and tools to investigate size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Afternoons will be spent exploring LEGO® building systems with Play-Well staff, applying real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as catapults, arch bridges, and more.  Camper drop off and pick up takes place at NHMU.
