NHMU Internship: Insect DNA

Estimated Duration of Internship: 2 Semesters

Number of hours the intern will work per week over a 16 week semester: 3 hours (1 academic credit hour)

Intern Position Description: NHMU’s Citizen Science program seeks assistance with the Citizen DNA Barcode Network. This project focuses on the collection, DNA analysis, organization and databasing of invertebrate specimens, in conjunction with NHMU employees and members of the community. The internship will support the work of NHMU Entomology and the Museum’s Citizen Science program to ensure the success of the Citizen DNA Barcode Network at NHMU, blending lab work and occasional public engagement.

Learning Outcomes or Goals: 

  1. Collaborate with NHMU Citizen Science team to learn about planning and implementing public insect collection, events, wet lab workshops, bioinformatics workshops, and other DNA-related activities. 
  2. Understanding aspects of lab management and supply maintenance, 
  3. Exposure to Museum collections and arthropod specimen management including; storage, databasing, and cataloging, 
  4. Skills in science communication and outreach

Appropriate majors: Biology; Biochemistry;
