NHMU Internship: Junior Science Academy

Estimated Duration of Internship: 2 Semesters

Number of hours the intern will work per week over a 16 week semester: 9 hours (3 academic credit hours)

Intern Position Description: The Junior Science Academy Intern will work closely with the Junior Science Academy Coordinator and volunteers to create an engaging environment for students. The intern will learn program curriculum and assist in teaching the Junior Science Academy classes, cleaning and maintaining supplies, and assist in long-term planning and curriculum writing for the JSA program. The intern might also be involved in other aspects of NHMU’s field trip programs such as greeting, orienting, evaluating, and interacting with students and their chaperones.

Learning Outcomes or Goals: 

  • Strengthen oral and written communication skills. 
  • Work collaboratively with Museum staff to assist and facilitate Junior Science Academy programming. 
  • Build self-confidence with activity development and facilitation.
  • Understand the role of informal education in Utah’s K-12 systems and the connection to Utah SEEd standards.
  • Learn to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Appropriate majors: We are open to really any area of study as long as the intern can explain how this would help them in achieving their future goals.

Preference given to applicants who are:

  • Undergraduate student or recent graduate (2022 or later)
  • Excited about science, technology, engineering, math, and education
  • Comfortable facilitating groups activities
  • Enjoy interacting with children and adults in a high-activity, high-energy, and noisy environment
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt quickly in changing circumstances; flexible working style
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Good oral and written communication skills
