Field Trip Lunch

Eating lunch at NHMU requires a reservation. If you do not have a lunch space reservation we recommend picnicking at one of the outdoor spaces listed below. 

Below are suggestions for places to eat lunch near NHMU. All are short driving distances. 

Fort Douglas Lawn Area

This is a large grassy area in the middle of the University of Utah near the Fort Douglas Museum. This grassy area does have some trees but is mostly an open field. Sometimes University students are in this area lounging, in class, or playing sports. There is no on campus parking for buses so they will need to drop off students and return for pickup. 

Amenities:

  • Picnic Tables: No Plan to sit on the ground 
  • Trash cans: No. Plan to pack out all trash. 

 

Davis Park

This park is in a quiet neighborhood, 1.5 miles from NHMU, and is best for smaller groups with younger students (preschool and kindergarten). There is playground equipment and a sand pit. There are benches and grass for sitting. Although there are trash cans, it is better for groups to pack out their trash.  There are water fountains, but they may not be turned on. There is room for a bus to park along the street..

Sunnyside Park

This is a large park about 1.5 miles west from NHMU.  This is a large park with plenty of space for students to eat, relax, or run around. There are multiple fields, playgrounds, pavilions, and playgrounds. There is room to park a bus in one of the parking lots. More information can be found online here

Donner Trail Park

This is a large park, just on the hill above Hogle Zoo, 2.5 miles from NHMU.  This park has a lot of room for larger groups of energetic students to run. There are two areas with limited playground equipment. Students should be mindful of small children who may be playing there. There are benches and some shade trees. Trash will have to be carried out. The water fountain may or may not be turned on, and there are no restrooms. There is room to park a bus to park along the road.

Sugarhouse Park

This is a 110 acre park, 4.5 miles from NHMU. There are playgrounds, a pond and a creek, restrooms, and drinking fountains. While there are pavilions, these are available by reservations only. There is plenty of shade and places for buses to park along the road. More information about the park can be found online here
