Mythology: A Quest to Find Connections Between Myths and Science

A griffin

Griffin:

This mythological beast is a hybrid: part eagle and part lion. It stems from ancient Greek culture.

Find animals in the Museum that you think would make the perfect hybrid animal! What abilities would it have? You can draw a picture or write a story about your creature here.

A diptych of a mammoth fossil and sculpture of cyclops.

Baby Mammoth (Level 3):

This baby Columbian mammoth has a large hole in the skull. Can you see how it looks like an eye hole? It was thought to have inspired Cyclops of Greek mythology. It was later found that this is where the trunk connects to the skull!

Fossil of a dire wolf

Dire Wolf (Level 3):

What mythical creature do you think the dire wolf could inspire? Think of an existing story or make one up!

Sobek

Sobek:

The Egyptian god of the Nile River has a crocodile head. Can you find other crocodiles at the Museum?

A diptych of a fossil of a giant sloth and a sketch of an ogre.

    Giant Sloth (Level 3):

This is a Megalonyx, a giant ground sloth. Do you see how it greatly resembles the ogre? “Ogre” originates from a French word, and ogres are very similar to the Jotnar of Norse Mythology.
