POSTERS PRESENTED

2021 Poster Session: Experimental Archaeology in Range Creek Canyon, Utah Society for American Archaeology 86th Annual Meeting, Virtual Conference.

Abstract

Since 2013, staff and students of the Range Creek Field Station (RCFS), eastern Utah, have been studying Fremont farming techniques by conducting actualistic farming experiments. These experiments are designed to understand the costs and benefits of irrigating and storing maize under modern environmental constraints. By farming small plots of maize at the RCFS, we are able to build expectations about what past farmers would have done. One experiment looks at the productivity of maize (yield) depending on amount of water given to each plot. A second experiment measures the costs of irrigation by constructing a simple surface irrigation system using only simple tools available 1000 years ago to Fremont farmers. A third experiment records the rooting depth of maize plants watered at varying depth. A fourth experiment measures the costs and benefits of constructing small replica storage structures used by the Fremont. The posters in this session will discuss the results of these experiments and how the results inform on the archaeology of Range Creek Canyon and other desert farmers. The topics include actualistic experiments, excavation of historic ditches, changes in rooting depth of heirloom maize varieties, and variability in maize starch when watered different amounts during the growing season.

SYMPOSIA

Symposium: Current Research on the West Tavaputs Plateau – Ongoing Archaeological Investigations in Nine Mile and Range Creek Canyons, Utah. Great Basin Anthropological Conference 2014, Boise ID.

Chairs: Jody Patterson and Shannon Boomgarden

Abstract

The West Tavaputs Plateau, home to Nine Mile, Range Creek, and Desolation Canyons, has been the focus of renewed archaeological interest for the last decade. Multiple excavations, horticultural experiments, and modern survey data are providing new and exciting insights into the subsistence, land use, settlement patterns, horticultural technology, and economics of both prehistoric and historic inhabitants of the plateau. Unfortunately, the archaeological record over large swaths of the plateau is also under constant threat from vandalism, looting, and development impacts. This symposium brings together academic, nonacademic, and agency archaeologists working on the West Tavaputs Plateau and adjoining areas to share the results from their current and ongoing projects pertaining to the area’s rich occupation history and its continued preservation.

Symposium: Archaeology and Paleoecology of Range Creek Canyon, 76th Annual meetings of the Society of American Archaeology, Sacramento CA. Organizer: Shannon Arnold Boomgarden, Chair: Duncan Metcalfe, Discussant: Kevin Jones

Abstract

Range Creek Canyon is a mid-elevation canyon in the West Tavaputs Plateau in central Utah. Located in a very rugged and remote region, the canyon contains a remarkably intact record of an intense Fremont occupation between A.D. 900 – 1200. To date over 400 sites have been recorded and only a fraction of the canyon has been surveyed. This symposium focuses on the results and direction of research now centered at the recently established University of Utah field station. Paper topics include experimental archaeology, agricultural productivity, isotopic analysis of soils, high elevation occupation, remote sensing, palynology, fire history, obsidian sourcing and dating.
