You may know that fireflies are in the beetle family Lampyridae. Members of this family are widespread. Currently, we aren't collecting data about non-luminescent lampyrids; there is no need to report data on those.
Occasionally, people see a flying insect under a bright light at night. These can be confused for fireflies because the light shines on them and makes them appear to bioluminesce. However, fireflies are unlikely to be around human lights—it throws them off! So, be sure your data reporting comes from dark areas. Thanks!
