Help create a celebration of living heritage

We're weaving the story for NHMU's next special exhibition

The Natural History Museum of Utah is embarking on an ambitious, multi-year, initiative that honors the rich traditions of Indigenous cultures in Utah.

This major project is a celebration of living heritage, cultural resilience, and artistry. It’s a deeply collaborative partnership between the museum and Indigenous knowledge keepers to share their communities’ stories in their own voices. And we need your help to make it a reality.

This initiative culminates in an all-new special exhibition opening exclusively at NHMU in December 2026.

Project highlights include:

  • A deep collaboration with 12 Indigenous co-curators, representing each of Utah’s federally recognized tribes, whose voices, lived experience, and traditional knowledge are guiding the stories that will be told.
  • More than 100 baskets and woven cradles from NHMU’s collections and the personal collections of our co-curators—each one a testament to generations of skill and creativity.
  • A robust suite of programming that includes an artist-in-residence program, performers who will share their artistry live at the Museum, and more.
  • An unforgettable educational experience for Utah students, with strong connections to the Utah Core Standards.
