Indian Art Market 2015: Gilmore Scott, 2nd Place Winner

Gilmore Scott is a member of the Navajo Nation and resides in Montezuma Creek, UT. He is a painter who works with strong, bold colors. He paints high southwest desert and plains landscapes, traditional baskets, traditional Navajo homes known as Hogan, and geometric designs that Navajo rug weavers are known for. “My images and subjects are interpretations of how I view my culture, my Diné (Navajo) heritage,” he says.

Scott studied art at the College of Eastern Utah and at Utah State University. Just short of a degree in Fine Arts, he started a nine-year career as a wild land firefighter. Now he has returned to his artwork, where he focuses on watercolors, acrylics and color pencils. He likes sealing pieces in resin rather than varnish.  That way his works have an enhanced glossy finish, which further brings out the vibrant colors. Scott’s awards include Best in Show - Edge Of The Cedars Museum Indian Art Market, 1st place - Southwest Indian Art Fair in Tuscon, AZ, and 1st place - Native American Arts Festival in Pinetop Lakeside, AZ.
