iNaturalist Identification Workshop
Event Details
Community Room
Learn how to Identify taxa on iNaturalist
iNaturalist is one of the largest databases for biodiversity on the planet, with millions of users submitting images throughout the year. In addition to being an Observer (someone who takes photos and adds them to iNaturalist), you can also be an Identifier (someone who helps to verify the observations that others have uploaded).
Join us for a crash-course in iNaturalist ID - including the why's, when's and how's, and meet local iNaturalist users and experts. This free event will include pizza, and a chance to chat with local experts.
Where: Natural History Museum of Utah, Community Room - Level 2, near the Museum Cafe (no ticket needed)
Event Schedule:
5:30-6:00pm - iNaturalist Identification tutorial (short presentation)
6:00-8:00pm - Pizza, and on your-own ID alongside other nature nerds. Drop by whenever you can!
What to bring: We recommend bringing a laptop or mobile device, so you can look through CNC observations on iNaturalist.
Audience: This workshop is ideal for individuals with background knowledge of taxonomic areas (like birds, insects, etc.), or individuals who would like to become more knowledgeable in these areas.
Registration isn't required, but we'd appreciate an RSVP, to know if you are planning to join us for this drop-in event:
Why are we talking about iNaturalist identification?
One of the largest bioblitz events in the world is coming to Utah April 25–28, 2025 - The City Nature Challenge. During these 4-days, cities around the globe will make iNaturalist observations of nearby wild plants and animals, resulting in thousands of observations to our local iNaturalist project, 2025 City Nature Challenge: Utah’s Wasatch.
With thousands of observations coming into this project, we need your help to identify and verify as many as possible - to enhance the scientific validity and make note of any interesting or exciting finds. Your knowledge of taxa can be of great use on iNaturalist!
Can't join us for the workshop? You can still help ID on your own!

Visit our 2025 City Nature Challenge: Utah’s Wasatch iNaturalist project anytime from April 25–May 4, and help make ID's on observations entered into the project.
Here are some virtual resources about making IDs on iNaturalist.
For inspiration: read this iNaturalist blog post (published in 2020) talking about the small percentage of iNaturalist users who are making ID's.
